Don’t Talk It About It Any Longer. Here Is Why…

Why? Well, one reason is that it often takes less time to actually do it than to talk about it. Secondly, taking action and gaining momentum is the best way to increase your chances of success.

Plus, there are some huge Economic and tax reasons coming in 2011 that are going to make it far more difficult to get started.

The largest tax increase on small businesses and people in general is going to take effect in January. And when I do say huge, I mean increases by 25% in some cases or more.  I have not heard much about it in the LameStream Media but it is coming.

This is the sunset of the Bush Tax reductions that helped get the economy back on its feet after 9-11 when we went into a temporary depression. Do you remember how bad that was? It got unemployment down to under 5% and raised overall tax revenues to the Treasury to the highest levels ever recorded. But that is not reported in the press.

Well, the logic with not continuing the tax reductions is much like leaving a baby on the rail road tracks when the train is coming and not doing anything about it. The Politicians are trying to say well, we did not put it there so it is not our fault and we are not going to take action. Just as assuredly as the tragedy that is predictable in that case is going to happen to small business start ups and to the Economy in general. This is not to mention the health care regulations and the Energy Tax bills and the new financial regulations that just passed. You are going to see financial fees go through the roof and credit to businesses dry up even more as well. Not to mention dividend taxes and as well as capital gains taxes.

What drives me nuts is that every single time the government lowers taxes, overall tax revenues increase. And every time when they raise taxes, the economy slows down and overall revenues decrease. This is beyond debate by the way. Anyone that says differently is saying your stupid by the way.

Dr. Arthur Laffer was one of the key proponents of tax cuts during the Regan years that helped create 30 million new jobs proved this with the Laffer Curve.

Think about it, when WalMart wants to make more money they have a sale, they don’t raise their prices.  Duhhh.

Which is why the stimulus plan is a bust and has not worked at all.  In fact, it has made things worse as the real unemployment rate is closer to 20% by many estimates.   They quit counting those people that are no longer eligible for unemployment.  In essence they are cooking the books.  But you are smart and I am sure you already know that.

Did you know that 100% of the money in the stimulus plan went to Government Agencies? Not one cent went directly to small or medium sized businesses.  Yea, the ones that actually create jobs.

Anyway, by raising taxes in January, it has the possibility of a train wreck caused by the Feds even worse than what they did to cause the Great Depression.

So, if you have ever thought about starting a business, do so now. Get going, talk to your accountant about the tax consequences of waiting or not waiting.

You can get a jump on things now before the storm hits. Owning your own business will at least give you some control over you own future and while everyone is running for cover, you can be making money. Because there where there is chaos, there is opportunity.

OK, the Hayek and Keyne’s Economic theory explained in a Rap song. (Keyene’s theory is what they are using now and it is not working even though it was long ago discredited. Kind of like thinking Bell Bottoms and Clogs are cool. (It happens in clothes and Economics, except that Bell Bottoms don’t lead to massive unemployment, inflation, and people losing their homes and businesses.)

There are a lot of choices today in the world of Websites and Blogs for your business.   The tough part is choosing the right one for your business that will make you money and not cost you an arm and a leg.

This will be a large shift in giving someone that only knows how to check their email with zero tech skills to build a fully richly featured Business website of unmatched functionality.

It is being called a Chameleon because it can mimic the look, feel, and functionality of nearly any site, running on any of the other platforms more quickly, easily, and better than anything else out there up until now.

Imagine being able to build a Website that looks like any of the best ones out there in a mater a few hours or days.  Now imaging being able to do it yourself our have someone do it for you and not break the bank or have to be a rocket scientist to ad any content you want from text, to graphics, to audio and video.  Or to be able to set up a completely functioning eCommerce site within an hour or two complete with Affiliate programs and upsells and downsells and in place.

Are you staying local in your business and being a Local Yokel?

I have seen this quite a bit recently with many businesses when it comes to searching for talent or opportunity for their business.  Be it Web Design, SEO, sales, or Consulting Help, and even new customers.

The businesses that do this are seriously shooting themselves in the foot.  In fact to use yet another gruesome analogy it is like throwing a Frog in a pot of cold water and turning on the heat until it boils.  The Frog won’t jump out, but if you put him in Hot water, they hop right out.

In other words, you won’t know you are cooked until it is too late.

Just think about it.  There are now millions of people that you can reach on the Web and just from a statistics standpoint, the guy or gal down the street is not going to even be in the top 5% best at what they do but, the person that you can snag on the Internet is?

So why would you want a second string player when your competition is playing with All Stars?

Can you imagine any sports team from College on up just getting players locally?  Well of course not.  So you should not be doing it either.

Oil Spill Gulf Of Mexico 2010

If the expected  moratorium on offshore drilling is placed by the administration as rumored, nearly every expert agrees that we could see $5.00+ gas prices at the pump and diesel could shoot up to $7.00.

Why should this matter to you other than it is going to make going to the pump painful and the price of everything you purchase could go up 10-15%, and heating a home could double this coming Winter?

Well, because it will drive even more people to the Web for services and products.   When even close trips cost $5 to get there and back, most people will be looking for even more things they can purchase without using their car and they will be looking to save money as the average consumer in America and Worldwide for that matter is going to get hit hard.

This is even without the proposed Cap and Tax bill on energy that Congress has said they are going to pass that will add a 25% tax to all energy costs including electricity.

So there has never been a better time to make sure that your Website is up and running and profitable.  I know we are getting busier than we have ever been.

How Is Your Business Going To Handle $5.00 Per Gallon Gas and $7.00 Gallon Diesel Fuel?

Just make sure you do not wait too long.  Gas prices are guaranteed to go up. Will they hit $5.00 per gallon?   Depends if they do put a moratorium on drilling.  But, I would say there is a 99% that you will see a 40% spike in prices even if they don’t.    With over 84% of all oil reserves in the US placed off limits to drilling by the Government and even tighter restrictions on coal and other normal energy sources with no real alternatives in site, it is pretty much assured that prices will continue to rise unless someone in Washington grows some brain cells.

But I have more faith in the Easter Bunny showing up at my door along with Santa Clause with a bottle of good Scotch asking me to sit down for a drink to discuss the Evil of Progressives than the DC crowd to get things right. 

Then again though, if you open your eyes to what is going to be happening shortly and you get your Website and marketing humming, you can do really well. That, and buying oil futures.

Those that don’t, will probably go out of business or at least be in for a really, really rough time of things.  It is as simple as that.

OK, this post is going to allow me to cover a couple of common themes that have been popping up over the past three weeks.

Recently, I have gotten at least seven different emails from seven different Gurus pointing me toward two of the same NEW products.

Both were HUGE NEW discoveries there were going to make me millions. 

Wrong Advice

1. The first one was that long copy sales copy and even copy was dead or did not matter, and that screen shot videos were the only way to go for sales pages.

Well, right off the bat I would have to put that in the Wrong Advice Column.  Long copy has been proven time and time again to out-sell short copy by several hundred times and copy always matters no matter what media you use.  So, the alarm bells went off on that one, so write that one off.

As far as doing screen shot videos for sales pages as a new thing,  well, I put down that technique in detail in my eBook, The Muse Blueprint and The 4 Hour Muse back in 2007.  So, nothing really new there at all.  I also went over it in detail a few years back at a big event for Internet Marketers in LA.

And to top it off, I also have an updated version of how to do this in my new Book  “Start On Monday”.  It is supposed to be released this week and I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Late To The Party

2. The other New Discovery was that Brick and Mortar small businesses  need help with marketing was a is a huge market.  Well Duh, I have been in that market for several years now.  All I have to say is, you guys are really kind of late to that party and it is not all that new to anyone that has been paying attention for the last 15 years. 

They are also talking about getting 1st page Google results using Videos… Hmm, Oh, they couldn’t have looked the series of blog posts I did two months ago could they?  LOL

Guess what, that is in  “Start On Monday” as well. Except you don’t have to pay  $2,997  for it.  It is only $27.  I swear that are charging that much for it.  Arghhh..

Seriously, call me up and I will tell you what to do in 20 minutes for $100 and give you a couple of tricks they won’t teach you to boot.  Or better yet, just buy the book.

How To Pay For The Right Kind Of Help

I have to be a bit careful here on this one because I work with some of these folks.  But if I hear of another PR / Marketing company that won’t put there compensation on the line and guarantee results or claims to be a Social Media expert and only has 1,000 followers on Twitter, my eyes are going to pop out.  Or if they don’t use their Blog for SEO and can’t  show me how they tie in with the clients marketing and sales, then in my book, you are wasting my clients money.

This is especially goes for Marketing companies.  If you won’t take a retainer on a monthly basis (OK, this can range from $500 to $50,000 depending on how the big the job is) and then work off a percentage of sales, you are full of it to put it bluntly.

Seriously think about it.  And this especially goes for some of the bigger companies.   When I take on a Marketing client or someone that has a PR firm, I ask this simple question.

How are they going to show your Return On Investment, and are they working off percentage of sales?   If not, they are probably not worth it period.

I have worked off of percentages from 10% to as high as 60% of sales.  But guess what?  I pay for myself in every single case and if I don’t produce, the client does not pay me squat.

So if I bring in $500,000 in sales to a client, I might get $100,000 t0 $250,000.  Here again, they probably would not have gotten those sales in the first place or gotten them as fast and so in essence, it is about as close to free money as you are going to find.   If someone came to you and said” Hey, I am going to bring in $500,000 in sales and it will only cost $100,000 to do it but you only pay me after I bring in the money”, would you take them up on it?

Of course you should not have to think about it for even a nano-second as the answer should be ” Yes, sign me up for 10 of those please right now”.   If not, then you really need to do some soul searching and do it quick.

Why?

Because you are probably not going to be in business much longer if your competition is one of those people that said yes.  If you really did not say yes.  Please think about it for a few minutes.  You have some issues that need addressed pronto.

Firing Clients

I would like to discuss this as it is perhaps counter-intuitive.

The customer is not always right.   If you find yourself butting heads with one, fire them.  It will make your life easier and you can spend more time with the ones that you do get along with and you can more than make up for any lost revenue by spending time with them instead of the client that is an idiot or won’t listen to you, or you simply don’t get along with very well.

It does not even have to be any negative connotation.  Sometimes, there is just not a good fit or there are communication issues.   That is fine. You will be doing your client and yourself a favor by removing yourself or them.  I used to try and stick with the client no matter how bad of a fit even only a few years ago.  Now I don’t.

The same goes with hiring consultants or service providers.  If you have one that you butt heads with or just can’t communicate with, get rid of them.  It is that simple.  I have been on both ends of the equation and stopping a situation like that sooner is usually better for both parties.  I always try and do this amicably, because you may want to work with them in the future.  They might just not be right for right now.

Now, on the other hand, you don’t want to hire a yes man or woman, because that can be even worse.  Because if you hire someone that is good, you are not going to agree with everything that they say or do, but on the other hand, you more than likely need to do something different or you would not have needed to hire them in the first place right?

When all else fails, trust your gut.

Hope these things help just a bit and start some ideas rolling around in your noodle. but most importantly, add profit to your bottom line.

It is well past 2:00 AM  and I am about bushed.  Started at 8:00 this morning and yet I am still pumped and in a bit of a contemplative mood and tired and wired at the same time  But I have found that in these moments that I have some of my best insights, right before my battery runs totally out.

All of the clutter and noise of the day is gone and it seems like my fore brain and subconscious meld.

Today, I spoke with members of my team scattered all across the globe.  From Europe, to America, and Canada, to the South Pacific and Asia.

I also did an interview with Dave Olson from HootSuite today as well.  Should have it posted later yet this morning.  Awesome interview with a super nice and cool guy who is with one of my favorite companies right now.  They know how to do software and services right.  Wait until you hear the interview.  They absolutely get it, it being Social Media.   Plus, they get Direct Marketing too, which most of the big boys don’t.  Hell, not only big boys, but, medium and small boys, and or girls for that matter do not get the fact that Social Media and the Web is nothing but direct marketing. 

Which reminds me, I am overdue for an update on Drayton Bird’s Common Sense Social Media Challenge.  OK, get that done later today there Anderson.  Yes, you know you are definitely tired when you start referring to yourself in the third person in a Blog post.

On top of that, I am working on some fantastically fun and exciting projects and working with some of the sharpest people I have ever had the pleasure to bump elbows with on a daily basis in my career.

It is because of these people that with all of the projects that are going on,  someone, somewhere in the World, 24 hours a day is working on one or more of the parts and pieces of the puzzle.

This has not only allowed me to finish projects so far ahead of estimates that I am flabbergasted, but even the ones that are running behind, are running behind because of the caliber of the team that has enables us to  increase the functionality, features, and usability of the project drastically beyond what we had first envisioned.

Because we are now truly plugged into the World, I am finding that mountains can be moved overnight.

If you ever get a chance to experience this, it is truly something to behold if you are a builder and creator of things.  I will be doing and in-depth examination of this process later on so that you can glimpse inside and I can explain how it was put together and hopefully recreate it yourself.

Now if I could only find an editor that kept the same crazy hours I do, or just maybe I will hire a few more to cover all of the shifts.

Lech Walesa gives his view of the world and some friendly advice to the United States of America

He speaks about the state of Entrepreneurs and Capitalism and the lack of morality in our government today.

This man is one of a very, very few politicians that I have respect for these days. He is of the mold of our founding fathers in that he put his life on the line when he got into politics.  He led the way for the downfall of the Soviet Union and is truly one of the great leaders of the past 100 years.  If you are old enough to remember the time when he lead Poland on a path to Democracy and most importantly Free Market Capitalism, you may feel the same way I do.

He stared down execution and torture to lead Poland to its current prosperity and freedom as a Union Organizer for the shipbuilders.  And unlike the Union organizers in the US, he then went on to be and still is one of the biggest promoters of Free Market Capitalism and Entrepreneurs in the world.  He has also seen first hand the destruction and evil that Intellectual Elitism, Communism and Socialism can do first hand and offers some advice for the people of the United States.

This from a man who has been there and done that and actually walks the talk.  And look , no teleprompters!

Here is a link to a very well done piece by Time magazine of all places. While he is far from perfect, he is someone with experience and knows how things work concerning government and Entrepreneurs and how to get things done.  He is  someone with those two qualities that America Politicians lack, and that the American people and businesses could sorely use right now.

Warren Buffett, Obama, The Banks, And You

Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway on Fox Business News today said that he does not agree with Obama’s New Proposed Regulations on Banks placing Government Regulations on risk.   He said that he felt it was the individual’s CEO’s and even their wives responsibility to manage risk.

He said that if there are failures, that the CEO’s should have to pay for failing to manage those risks. He also went on to say that by implementing such regulations, there there are often unintended consequences.

And those consequences may already be happening as Banking stocks have tanked today and JP. Morgan and others may be getting rid of their banking divisions.

The bottom line is that the consequences of even the proposed regulations is that it will make it even hard for small businesses to get loans and it has cause the loss of billions of dollars of value for shareholders of those banks just today.

Buffett declined to address comments concerning the socialistic aspects of the proposed Obama regulations.
