If you have never read this, you are in for a treat. While there has been much revisionist history concerning what Thanksgiving is and was all about, here is the REAL story. A hint (The triumph of Capitalism that saved the Pilgrims and therefore the US of A and you and me too!)

Here is the real story… Enjoy.. I have posted the short version and another longer one. Would love to hear what you think.

God Bless you and yours on this most splendorous of Truly American Holidays!

The Real Story Behind Thanksgiving

Did you know that the first [Plymouth Colony Pilgrim's] Thanksgiving was a celebration of the triumph of private property and individual initiative?

William Bradford was the governor of the original Pilgrim colony, founded at Plymouth in 1621. The colony was first organized on a communal basis, as their financiers required. Land was owned in common. The Pilgrims farmed communally, too, following the “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs” precept.

The results were disastrous. Communism didn’t work any better 400 years ago than it does today. By 1623, the colony had suffered serious losses. Starvation was imminent.

Bradford realized that the communal system encouraged and rewarded waste and laziness and inefficiency, and destroyed individual initiative. Desperate, he abolished it. He distributed private plots of land among the surviving Pilgrims, encouraging them to plant early and farm as individuals, not collectively.

The results: a bountiful early harvest that saved the colonies. After the harvest, the Pilgrims celebrated with a day of Thanksgiving — on August 9th.

Unfortunately, William Bradford’s diaries — in which he recorded the failure of the collectivist system and the triumph of private enterprise — were lost for many years. When Thanksgiving was later made a national holiday, the present November date was chosen. And the lesson the Pilgrims so painfully learned was, alas, not made a part of the holiday.

Happily, Bradford’s diaries were later rediscovered. They’re available today in paperback. They tell the real story of Thanksgiving — how private property and individual initiative saved the Pilgrims.

This Thanksgiving season, one of the many things I’m thankful for is our free market system (imperfectly realized as it is). And I’m also grateful that there are increasing numbers of Americans who are learning the importance of free markets, and who are working to replace government coercion with marketplace cooperation here in America and around the world.

Paul Schmidt

– copied from http://FreedomKeys.com/thanksgiving.htm which was copied from the Nov. 20, 1997 issue of THE LIBERATOR ONLINE at http://www.theadvocates.org/liberator/vol-02-num-21.htm

“Back in the early 80s, we took the kids up to Plymouth to see my wife’s sister who lived there at the time. Visited Plymouth Plantation. During the tour, I was struck by the presence of fortified guard shacks in the town square and asked the guide if they were a last line of defense for the citizens there if trouble with the natives spilled into the compound. He told us that they were for the control of the FOOD RIOTS which broke out those first few winters — BEFORE they abandoned their experiment with Marxism before Karl was even born…. Seems each generation or so we must relearn the hard lessons of history.”

The Great Thanksgiving Hoax

Mises Daily: Saturday, November 20, 1999 by Richard J. Maybury

Each year at this time school children all over America are taught the official Thanksgiving story, and newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it. It is all very colorful and fascinating.

It is also very deceiving. This official story is nothing like what really happened. It is a fairy tale, a whitewashed and sanitized collection of half-truths which divert attention away from Thanksgiving’s real meaning.

The official story has the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, coming to America and establishing the Plymouth colony in the winter of 1620-21. This first winter is hard, and half the colonists die. But the survivors are hard working and tenacious, and they learn new farming techniques from the Indians. The harvest of 1621 is bountiful. The Pilgrims hold a celebration, and give thanks to God. They are grateful for the wonderful new abundant land He has given them.

The official story then has the Pilgrims living more or less happily ever after, each year repeating the first Thanksgiving. Other early colonies also have hard times at first, but they soon prosper and adopt the annual tradition of giving thanks for this prosperous new land called America.

The problem with this official story is that the harvest of 1621 was not bountiful, nor were the colonists hardworking or tenacious. 1621 was a famine year and many of the colonists were lazy thieves.

In his ‘History of Plymouth Plantation,’ the governor of the colony, William Bradford, reported that the colonists went hungry for years, because they refused to work in the fields. They preferred instead to steal food. He says the colony was riddled with “corruption,” and with “confusion and discontent.” The crops were small because “much was stolen both by night and day, before it became scarce eatable.”

In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, “all had their hungry bellies filled,” but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims, it was famine and death. The first “Thanksgiving” was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.

But in subsequent years something changes. The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, “instead of famine now God gave them plenty,” Bradford wrote, “and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God.” Thereafter, he wrote, “any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day.” In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn.

What happened?

After the poor harvest of 1622, writes Bradford, “they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop.” They began to question their form of economic organization.

This had required that “all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means” were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, “all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock.” A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take out only what he needed.

This “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” was an early form of socialism, and it is why the Pilgrims were starving. Bradford writes that “young men that are most able and fit for labor and service” complained about being forced to “spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children.” Also, “the strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes, than he that was weak.” So the young and strong refused to work and the total amount of food produced was never adequate.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of famines.

Many early groups of colonists set up socialist states, all with the same terrible results. At Jamestown, established in 1607, out of every shipload of settlers that arrived, less than half would survive their first twelve months in America. Most of the work was being done by only one-fifth of the men, the other four-fifths choosing to be parasites. In the winter of 1609-10, called “The Starving Time,” the population fell from five-hundred to sixty.

Then the Jamestown colony was converted to a free market, and the results were every bit as dramatic as those at Plymouth. In 1614, Colony Secretary Ralph Hamor wrote that after the switch there was “plenty of food, which every man by his own industry may easily and doth procure.” He said that when the socialist system had prevailed, “we reaped not so much corn from the labors of thirty men as three men have done for themselves now.”

Before these free markets were established, the colonists had nothing for which to be thankful. They were in the same situation as Ethiopians are today, and for the same reasons. But after free markets were established, the resulting abundance was so dramatic that the annual Thanksgiving celebrations became common throughout the colonies, and in 1863, Thanksgiving became a national holiday.

Thus the real reason for Thanksgiving, deleted from the official story, is: Socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets, and we thank God we live in a country where we can have them.

I am tired of the posers out there and it is beginning to piss me off quite frankly.

If you are a local business in virtually any town in the US. I mean a Plumber, Dentist, Plastic Surgeon, Baker, Hairdresser or pretty much any other business that could benefit from being on the first page of Google and other search engines in your town than you need to read this.

Have you spent thousand on Radio, TV, Newspapers or even on Google Ad Words with less than stellar results?

Well, being on the first page of Google in your town can blow away the results of all of those as well as using some of the other online marketing techniques that I will implement for you. Whatever results you have gotten online in the past, I am going to show you how to double them. I guarantee it.

If you would like to have new clients for your business on a steady basis and dominate your competition then this is for you.

I am going to be taking a very select and limited group of clients. I am only going to be accepting one client per niche per city.

Last but not least, I going to give you a money back guarantee that this will drastically improve your any results you have gotten from online marketing.

Ask yourself how this could impact your business. Think about what having new clients coming on a regular basis will do for you business, your piece of mind, your bottom line.

What could being on the first page of Google or Bing or both do to your bottom line?

Like I said, one business per niche per city. First come first served.

Call, 307-459-1092 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM EST. Please leave a message if we don’t answer. We have been getting rather busy as of late. And this is all white hat. If you do the right things in this business you can and will be rewarded.

Once I hit my number of clients, then this offer will be over. Talk to you soon.

Cheers,
Andrew Anderson

OK, my friend’s 15 year old daughter Megan said this to me awhile ago and I realize how wise she is every day.

If you run a business, this is especially true. In Tony Schwartz’s book, The Power Of Full Engagement, he shows several studies that when you get interrupted by things like texts and emails that it takes you a full 20 minutes to get back to the mental focus that you had before you stopped what you were doing to check the text, email, im etc. Wow, does that suck or what?

Not only that, specifically when you are texting, because of the brevity, important details are often lost and misunderstandings occur on a regular basis.

How Much Texts Really Cost You

I am in the process of quantifying this, but in the studies I am doing right now with a couple of guinea pigs, each text looks like it costs somewhere between $20 to $300 in actual lost revenue and this is harder to quantify, but it could be over $500 to $1,000+ in lost opportunity costs. Pretty cool!

How does that make you feel?

So, do yourself and your business a favor, and stop texting unless it is a freaking emergency. Because it does make you stupid even if you are not and it does hurt your bottom line whether you realize it or not.

Plus, if you really have to answer texts all day, you really need to rearrange how you are running your business. If you can’t disengage, you don’t have a business, you just have a job.

If I don’t answer your text, now you know why.

Cheers,

LikeTelevision Watch Movies and TV Shows

One of the biggest mistakes I see Entrepreneurs make is that they think that they can go it alone. Let me clue you in. That is just plain wrong! If you want to really grow and hit your full potential you you need a Tonto. You need a side kick and if you are really smart, several of them. Not only the more the merrier, but the more the money you will make! A partner in crime not only works with your business, but with you life as well. Things just go better when you can fill in each others gaps and watch your partner’s back.

But, many of us are control freaks by nature and like doing stuff our own way. Get over it. It does not work well that way.

You cannot do it all by yourself. The easiest and hardest way to do that is to snag a partner or two. When it works, it works great, when it does not work so well, it sucks really, really bad.

Good partners are like finding a good mate. It can be hard but there are techniques that you can learn and ways to go about doing so. You may get luck on the first try or it may take some dating to find just the right one.

The other way to find your side kick is to hire them. I have people that I pay via profit sharing, and I also use PVA or Pooled Virtual Assistants. PVA’s are a term I coined in my book The Muse Blueprint and I created the term and implemented it because I needed back up. So, I created a pool of Virtual Assistants and would assign items to the pool, and someone would get it done, it someone was not available, I had someone else available to get it done.

So whether you hire and partner up with someone or better yet several someones, you should do so as soon as you can. It can and will make a big difference in your success.

Cheers,

Pulling The Trigger = Making More Money

The vast majority of posts come from personal experiences that I am currently living. Well, here is one for you.

For most companies and you as a person, you really need to start pulling the trigger and then worry about aiming.

Read, aim, fire only applies to very few things... one of them being 400 yard shots.

What most of you don't realize is that you only hit something when you pull the trigger.

Pulling The Trigger = Making More Money

For most companies and you as a person, you really need to start pulling the trigger and then worry about aiming.

Read, aim, fire only applies to very few things… one of them being 400 yard shots.

What most of you don’t realize is that you only hit something when you pull the trigger.

I Am Going To Let You In On A SecretIt Should Be, Ready, Fire, Aim!

Guess what? Did you know that you have a full magazine with virtually an unlimited amount of 10 gauge shotgun shells at your disposal? And as long as it is pointed in the general direction of what you are shooting at your are going to hit something. You thought a 12 gauge was bad, a 10 gauges is badder.

The VAST majority of non-success or no success, or let’s just say it, Failure, comes from not pulling the trigger. It IS NOT FROM NOT HITTING THE TARGET. Because if you are not shooting you can’t say you failed. You are just not trying. The only way to get better at this and improve your aim is that you have to actually shoot rounds to zero in on your target.

Their is no prize for conserving ammo here. Give me someone that is blazzing away at the target over someone that preps for it the whole freaking day, or days, or for weeks. Or has to tweak things or make them more complicated. This is true in 99.99% of all business projects I see. Give me someone that can execute please….

You get a F if you can’t pull the trigger. You do not pass go, you will not collect two hundred dollars, you are screwed. If you want to hit what you are aiming at you have a Bazillion percent better chance if you are pulling the trigger and actually firing away at the target.

In fact, keep on shooting and you will hit it.

So, pull the trigger already and quick dorking around and make some money.

Cheers,

As some of you may know, I have been involved in what has become a rather large software project that as they often do, is taking a bit longer to put together than we had hoped, yet is still on track for doing what we had planned it to do and more. In fact Beta is actually starting for real. Mind blowing comes to mind. </span

I am bumping this post up yet again because I am reminded of the value and transcendental truth of this simple saying.

The first time I heard that adage from two young guys named Hollis and Carter, it was like someone slapped me upside the head and it was game changer for me.

As some of you may know, I have been involved in what has become a rather large software project that as they often do, is taking a bit longer to put together than we had hoped, yet is still on track for doing what we had planned it to do and more. In fact Beta is actually starting for real. Mind blowing comes to mind.

What we planned for it to do is basically make everything that I had cussed various Web designers, Programmers and pieces software out for and make it easy to do for an amateur. That is make it easy to put together Websites, Blogs, Sales and Squeeze pages, and Shopping Carts for someone with no technical skills whatsoever.

Basically we wanted to give someone who’s sole technical skill was to check their email, the ability to create what normally only professional Website developers and Programmers could do at a huge cost, and on top of that, be able to do it in a few hours, not in a few days or weeks that it would take a Pro to do.

Guess what? We freakin pulled it off and I think it is going to be a game changer as far as how Websites, Blogs, Landing Pages, and profitable online businesses are put together.

My point about bringing this up is that this never could have happened had we not planned to do this at the outset. Regardless of how many people said it could never be done, if we had not properly planned it out, it would not have been brought into being and we would have ended up with just another piss poor piece of software.

The impact was so great on me personally perhaps because in the Organization People Pattern(tm) of my Personality Language(tm) profile, I am a Free Spirit and I never used to like to really plan anything because it bugged the heck out of me. I know the reason why and it was mostly because I was rebelling against the rigid Structurists that were around me.

By the way, if you have not read the book Personality Language yet, I highly suggest it. It is kind of mind blowing as to what it will tell you about what makes you and others tick. I learned more in that book about basic human behavior than any other book that I have read.

Back to the 7 Ps. What I finally realized that if you don’t have Prior Proper Planning you are almost always doomed to Piss Poor Performance in everything you do in Business and in life to some degree. That is to say if you don’t know the desired outcome you want and know the steps you need to take to get there, you won’t arrive anywhere close to your goal.

Kind of like going across country on a deadline and not having a map. Yet, I used to do it all of the time. So now, I just take out a piece of paper and write down what I need to get done, some specific steps in order to accomplish it and bam, things get done.

Amazingly easy but it does work and I highly suggest it. ALSO, I highly recommend that you use Bubbl.us ! to set up Mind Maps and Blueprints of your plan. . Here is a link that shows you what it can do. It is free.

Here is to Prior Proper Planning Preventing Piss Poor Performance.

Cheers,

I hope to have more chats with her about this mind-blowing new way to communicate with your customers and increase your profits.

We talk about how Personality Language and you will find out why you want to layout all of your Blog posts, Sales Letters, and Information Products this way if you want to have the most success with them and become profitable.

Marilyne Woodsmall and Wyatt Woodsmall, who are Human Success Modelers wrote this as a primer to introduce this new way of thinking.

While you may not have ever heard of them before, I can bet that you have heard of, or seen on TV, or on the Internet, or read the books of some of the many people that either one or both of them have coached. People like Anthony “Tony” Robbins, Eben Pagan of Internet Marketing fame (if you have never heard of him before, under the pen name David DeAngelo who sells over $20,000,000 of Dating eBooks and Advice on the Internet every year and doesn’t even have a published “real book”) , Joe Polish of Piranha Marketing, world-class Marketer and Joint Venture specialist extraordinaire, and finally a host of Olympic Athletes and Coaches that brought home oodles of Medals, and quite a few other people that you have heard or seen as well.

Again the Woodsmall’s don’t go out of their way to mention them as they don’t like to talk about the people that they have worked or are working with all that much. It is just the way they operate, and I can respect that.

The only reason that I bring these people up is help you give some weight to what I am about to share with you. The folks that I mentioned have used what they learned from Marilyne and Wyatt to help make themselves tens of millions of dollars and to achieve success at a world class level that very few people are ever able to obtain.

Part of what those individuals did to obtain those ultra-high levels of success was to Leverage, with a capital L, what Marilyne and Wyatt gave to them to propel themselves to higher levels of success faster than they could have done on their own.

Now imagine if you had access to that same type of information that you could use to Leverage yourself to those ultra-high levels of success and profitability? Now you can.

Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Press the play button and find out how to improve your sales with Personality Language.

No, not an ancient Chinese Proverb, just an Andrew Anderson one.

This axiom has been said in many different ways and no matter which way it is said, it is still true. It does not matter if we are talking your Business, the latest project, or even dating.

Not concentrating on one thing and getting it completed or at least to the next level will in the end more than likely spell disaster almost every single time.

While I know this and operate this way almost always in my business life, sometimes I still slip and I also have to ride hard on the people that I work with at times as well

“Concentrating On Too Many Things Gets Nothing Done…”

No, not an ancient Chinese Proverb, just an Andrew Anderson one.

This axiom has been said in many different ways and no matter which way it is said, it is still true. It does not matter if we are talking your Business, the latest project, or even dating.

Not concentrating on one thing and getting it completed or at least to the next level will in the end more than likely spell disaster almost every single time.

While I know this and operate this way almost always in my business life, sometimes I still slip and I also have to ride hard on the people that I work with at times as well.

On the personal side, I have had less success in adhering to this. Which in most articles you read, they are strictly about business, but none of us operate in a vacuum which is why we need to balance things out in both our personal lives and in our business lives.

Business life affects our personal life and vice versa. And I am going to break some news that probably is not news to a lot of you. If you are an Entrepreneur, many of us including myself are far better at the business part of the combo than at the personal part of it.

This is perhaps partially due to the fact that as the Entrepreneur, we get our Jollies off on the business side of things. Nearly every successful One I know is an Entrepreneur precisely because they love what they are doing! Which is why Entrepreneurs as a whole are the happiest people under every measurement no matter how you cut it. At least that is what the Psycho-Ologists say or so I am told.

Now I am going to try and not project here, but I know that a lot of you will be able to relate perhaps just a little bit or maybe even a lot to what I am about to say.

What a lot of people do not realize is that even the most messy or seemingly disorganized Entrepreneur to many may seem like they are unorganized and just flying around all of the time.

Which point in fact typically could not be further from the truth. Even if they don’t realize it themselves any successful Entrepreneur is extremely organized in their own fashion. Even if it is in their own head. Many of them may seem like the messiest people in the world when it comes to their desks and files which for the most part they could probably use a bit of help with, but when it comes to what is really important, i.e. the money making things, if you delve into the head a little bit, they are often times able to organize and compartmentalize things extremely well. In fact they are often amazingly able to process information that most people would find mind boggling.

Not only organize it but connect seemingly disorganized and seemingly non-related ideas and information and turn it into something new, wonderful and often times beautiful. Let’s not forget profitable too!

The whole messy desk or office thing is a whole different beast and is related to Personality Language types and if I can I will try and get Marilyn Woodsmall to shed some light on that specifically one of these days. If you want extra credit or to enlighten yourself, get a copy of the book, “ Personality Language” by clicking here. It actually has very little to do with organizational skills in many cases but a matter of what is important to the individuals personality type.

OK, now this is where the rubber hits the road and I am going to share my own recent revelations brought about by a friend of mine who happens to be one very sharp cookie.

What popped up was that sometimes in your business, you often may have several projects running concurrently and the scheduling may not always be at your discretion. Which can lead to some rather creative ways in which to get things done and even some overlaps.

While this is OK upon occasion, it is not a good way to run your business. But if you have been around and are successful, as Entrepreneurs we can become pretty adapt at that.

I have to say that as this point in my life I put far more time in my Business than I do my personal life. This is because I have a start-up that I have been working on for over 18 months now it is the mother of all Muse’s or Musi!

I will share it with you very soon. Not only do I have that, but I have still have kept a few clients and keep my fingers in a couple of small enterprises. It keeps me mostly out of trouble for the most part.

Well, in the personal arena, I have a tendency to kind of let it take care of itself without nearly the amount of attention or planning that I put into my businesses. Well guess what? I am sure you can imagine some of the results.

Yup, you guessed. By stacking things and not paying attention to one thing at a time, I have ended not doing things in let’s say as in an optimal fashion as possible.

Don’t Screw Yourself!

By not concentrating on one thing, lassoing it and tying it up and moving on to the next item, you end up screwing not only yourself, but the people you are involved with as well. Be it going out to parties, meeting with friends, spending time with loved ones, or even dating if you are single.

The key is to bring a little bit of that great organizational and prioritizing skills that you use so well and effortlessly in your businesses to your personal life.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit. Perhaps because even though the business part of your life can be hectic,,, or perhaps because of it, you get an adrenalin buzz from it whereas the personal side can be a bit tedious and not a whole lot of fun sometimes. Just the way life is sometimes…

But, what I realized this weekend, while I would never leave lose ends laying around with my business, once I started looking at what was going on in my personal life, it looked kind of like a tattered old Burlap Bag.

So, this week I will be taking out the scissors and cutting off the loose ends, sewing things up and actually engaging in planning and organization with as much emphasis as I put into my businesses.

I had not realized how out of control it had become, nor how much it was weighing on me and slowing me down unnecessarily.

Not only that, it was not making things all that much fun for the people that care about me and those that I care about as well.

It will not get all mended over night, but 80% of it can be fixed in a day or so with only about 20% effort. Yes, it is the good old Pareto Principal in action again.

Perhaps after reading about my epiphany, you can have your own.

Now about the “Profit Out The Wazooo” part. Well, I can already see that by not specifically focusing on things in my personal life, that is was taking a lot of the enjoyment out of it and causing me and the ones the people that I care for headaches. This was and is also impacting my business. Guess what? My business and personal life are connected at the hip even though I and perhaps even you may forget that.

I don’t want to give you the impression that my personal life is totally hosed, but compared to how organized and smooth running my business life is, it is not even close.

But the good news is like with most business situations, once you recognize what the issues are, they are quite easily fixed.

The kicker is, it won’t get done if you don’t focus on it or if you try and focus on too many things at once.

I will leave you with something to ponder. The real reason why we start doing this is because we are afraid we will actually get what we are looking for.(BINGO!) Then what? It is often times a defense mechanism so that we won’t have to deal with getting hurt or be disappointed. This is especially true if you have gotten burned in the past in a similar situation.

You let doubt creep in and sabotage the very things you are trying to accomplish. But guess what? There are happy endings, things do work out, success is possible and usually many times greater than you can imagine. In business, life, and in love!

You can have it, just don’t focus on too many things, take advantage of the opportunity while it is there, because truly great ones have a limited shelf life and you need to grab them, even if you are a bit scared. Don’t be kicking yourself in the butt the rest of your life.

So, figure out the one thing you need to concentrate on and do it. Success and happiness will follow.

Cheers,
Andrew Anderson

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to “recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

NOTE:

Shortly after the Thanksgiving Proclamation was written, it was lost for 130 years. The original document was written in long hand by William Jackson, secretary to the President, and was then signed by George Washington. It was probably misplaced or mixed in with some private papers when the US capitol moved from New York to Washington, D.C. The original manuscript was not placed in the National Archives until 1921 when Dr. J. C. Fitzpatrick, assistant chief of the manuscripts division of the Library of Congress found the proclamation at an auction sale being held at an art gallery in New York. Dr Fitzpatrick purchased the document for $300.00 for the Library of Congress, in which it now resides. It was the first official presidential proclamation issued in the United States.
