<p>Why is this so? It is because when people have already gotten all the carrots and sticks they think they need to lead what they believe to be an acceptable lifestyle, then they no longer have that fire burning within to move any farther. Life is okay as is, nothing more nothing less, no bells and whistles; yet this is satisfactory to them so they don’t care to budge one bit. These are the very people who end up staying in jobs for years and are quite content to do so.</p>

<p>Most people are mired in mediocrity. All too sad yet true. These are the so-called masses. And these are precisely the people who don’t want to change even if they have the opportunity to do so as I’ll explain shortly.</p>
<p>This has major implications regarding motivation in the workplace. There are basically four reasons why people aren’t motivated:</p>
<ol>
<li>
<p>People who are <i>move toward</i> in orientation and have nothing towards which to move.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>People who are <i>move away from</i> and have nothing from which to move away.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>People who are <i>move toward</i> and who have reached their set goals and have nothing else to get them out of their satisfaction zone.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>People who are <i>move away from</i> and who have somehow managed to move away from all the things which they would like to avoid.</p>
</li>
</ol>
<p>The last two types are the most challenging elements in any workforce because they don’t want to move in any direction. These people are a nightmare to any team, to any manager, to any organization, to anyone who wants to get ahead because they are indifferent to change. These people are the masses, the people who are content to live their lives in mediocrity.</p>
<p>Once again, the <i>Motivation People Pattern</i> is the basis of everything that we do in life, or don’t do for that matter. Imagine the possibilities if we could move people from relatively content to ecstatic and beyond! Tune in for more next time.</p>

<p><strong>WHEN TO USE THEM AND WHEN NOT…</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>In our prior discussion, I talked about the <em>Evaluation People Pattern</em>™. This critical <em>Evaluation People Pattern</em>™ determines how an individual makes a judgment. In the context of sales, this pattern reveals how an individual makes a judgment to buy a product or service.</p>
<p>If you remember, there are two types of people when it comes to the Evaluation People Pattern™: Internal People and External People. <span id="more-3932"></span>Individuals who have what we call an <em>Internal Referential Filter</em> don’t want to hear about what other people are saying about a product or a service that they are thinking about purchasing. On the other side of the coin, there are those who have an <em>External Referential Filter</em>. They need to know what other people think before they purchase something. Remember, too, that there are some Internal People who will rely on what another person is saying if that person happens to be a proven expert on the product or service and has accurate information.</p>
<p>It makes a huge difference whether you are selling to someone with an internal pattern or an external pattern. Most Internal People think that the public at large is totally lacking in awareness and taste when it comes to making evaluations or judgments. In fact, our term, the <em>Science of Idiots</em>™ is quite <em>apropos</em> here, since Internal People view External People to be idiots for the most part. The former ask in referring to the latter: How is it possible to be such an idiot as to need another person’s opinion before buying something?</p>
<p>On the other hand, External People can’t imagine how a person can buy anything in life without getting feedback from others. They think that Internal People are idiots for not wanting the opinion of other people.</p>
<p>So what can you do to tailor your sales communication, whether one-on-one or on your site to reach these types of people? First, let us consider External People. If you are dealing with External People there are two viable strategies. One, you can position yourself as their external point of reference. The second strategy is to have people they respect or admire talk about your product.</p>
<p>The first strategy means that you have to be knowledgeable about your product or service as well as be trustworthy. Even sleazy car salesmen types don’t fare well here. Customers are much savvier than you may think and they certainly don’t want or need the traditional hype that has worked in the past in certain niches. The best rule of all is to always come from a place of integrity. In our work professionally modeling top salespeople over the years, my husband and I have always found that the best of the best have integrity and also create trust among their customers. I’ll delve more into this topic in a future article.</p>
<p>The second strategy involves telling your customers what people they respect have to say about what you are selling or providing. This means finding out who those people are for your particular customers.</p>
<p>In brief, with External People:</p>
<ol>
<li>Provide as much information or referral material that you can.</li>
<li>Give as many testimonials as possible (more is better than less here)</li>
<li>Stress what others think about your product.</li>
<li>Have them see and or hear others’ reactions to your product or service.</li>
<li>Know that they are easily influenced by others.</li>
</ol>
<p>Now, with Internal People, the strategy is totally different. With them you want to go out of your way to avoid telling them what other people are saying about your product or service. In fact, an Internal People will think less of you if try to sell your product based on testimonials or based on others’ opinions. They simply will view you as another idiot who has no clue about things.</p>
<p>In brief, with Internal People:</p>
<ol>
<li>Suggest that they have their own internal check regarding the buying decision.</li>
<li>Stress that it is up to them and not up to you, as to whether to buy or not.</li>
<li>Avoid giving testimonials.</li>
<li>Tell them that you know that they are ultimately making the buying decision.</li>
<li>Know that telling them what others think is useless and may cost you the sale.</li>
</ol>
<p>Also, remember that if you are an expert and or have someone else’s expertise to present regarding your product, it may be helpful to the Internal Person and only if the information is from an expert and is relevant.</p>
<p>In summary, it is critical in sales to know what criteria your customers are using when buying anything. This is why it is so important to appeal to both the Internal and External People in your presentation. In this way, you cover all possibilities; and you increase your sales as well as avoid missing half your customers and thus, avoid losing sales.</p>

<p>Long before the internet came along, people have been giving testimonials for products. TV sales have always played a huge part in the conspicuous consumer society in which we <a href="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1.png"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 5px; display: inline; border-width: 0px;" title="1" src="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/1_thumb.png" border="0" alt="1" width="147" height="176" align="left" /></a>live and still do so today. With the onset of the Internet, we have been overwhelmed with the typical and quite annoying bottomless sales letter that is riddled with endorsements and testimonials to convince prospective buyers to purchase a product or service.</p>
<p>And with TV shopping channels like QVC and the Home Shopping Network, testimonials play an increasingly important role in selling. Or do they? The question is do they really work with everyone? The answer is NO, NO, NO!!!</p>
<p>In fact, only about half of the population cares about what others think about a product before they buy it. The other half simply couldn’t care less what other people say about what they are buying. Which type are you? And more important, which type are your customers? Just because you may like to hear what other people are saying about products before purchasing them doesn’t mean that all of your customers think the same way. Or you may not care about testimonials and yet some of your customers won’t buy your products without them.<span id="more-3904"></span></p>
<p>Are you a person who thrives on hearing what others have to say about a particular product? Or are you a person who can’t stand listening to or to reading about what people are saying about a product or service that you are contemplating buying? And there is another possibility as well. Are you someone who occasionally likes to read or to hear testimonials from certain individuals? How you answer these questions is quite revelatory.</p>
<p>In fact, it will determine still another <em>People Pattern</em>™ that comprises what we call <em>Personality Language</em>™. It is called the <em>Evaluation People Pattern</em>™. This all important <em>Evaluation People Pattern</em>™ determines how an individual makes a judgment, and in the context of this discussion, how an individual makes a judgment to buy a product or service. <em>The emphasis is on how and not why.</em></p>
<p>Basically there are two major elements that make up the <em>Evaluation People Pattern</em>™. There are some individuals who make decisions to buy based on internal criteria and then there are some individuals who make decisions to buy based on external criteria. Those who make buying decisions based on internal criteria have what we refer to as an <em>Internal Referential Filter or People Pattern</em>™. They simply know inside that what they are doing or what they are buying, in this case, is the right thing for them. Those who make buying decisions based on external criteria have what we refer to as an <em>External Referential Filter or People Pattern</em>™. They need to hear what others think and tend not to buy anything without this feedback.</p>
<p>There are also some <em>Internal People</em> who, under certain circumstances, don’t mind having an expert give advice or information about a product, and only if it is information from an expert and not just anyone offering their opinion.</p>
<p>The bottom line is that <em>Internal People</em> don’t need feedback from others when it comes to buying products or services (unless, as mentioned, they want expert information under some circumstances); and <em>External People</em> need feedback before they purchase something. <em>External People </em>are often incapable of buying something without hearing first what other people think about it.</p>
<p>What this means for you in sales is that you have to tailor your communication on your sales page and/or in your presentation to both include testimonials for <em>External People</em> as well as include phrases that target the <em>Internal People</em> among your customers. <p>they  don&#8217;t know their customer very well and if they knew about &#8220;Personality Language&#8221; &#8482; they would not have gotten rid of the old version, but, instead just have added the new version to their menu.</p>
<p>I am not the only one that is skeptical.</p>
<p>&#8220;When a restaurant company radically changes their menu, usually there&#8217;s a curiosity bump involved in the results,&#8221; said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy. &#8220;But it&#8217;s too early to tell if that&#8217;s going to be sustainable for a long time.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, if you consider it did get a lot of publicity and they spent a boat load of money on on their PR campaign, a bump was there.  But as they say, was is a dead cat bounce?  I am inclined to think so.</p>
<p>That and the big number at the bottom &#8211;  Annual revenue fell 2 percent to $1.4 billion from $1.43 billion.</p>
<p>As I have said in all my posts, I do wish them well, but I hope they smarten up and get with the program and bring back the old version.  Which I have heard they already have done on a limited scale.</p>
<p>There are thousand of people that work for Domino&#8217;s that depend on the people at the top getting it right.  I have spoken with a couple of the franchise owners and while they are keeping mostly quite, they are nervous.</p>
<p>I think they have every right to be quite a bit nervous actually.  We will see how this plays out next quarter.</p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">OK, so for the rest of you what is the lesson here?  If you get on TV and it is actually easier than you think and actually I will give you some tips on how to do that, make sure that you control what is going to happen.  Although, I am pretty sure Domino&#8217;s shelled out some big bucks for the spot above.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Figure out the exact outcome that you want before you go on the air and then only set it up so that it can come out that way.  Got it? </span></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">You want the table slanted completely in your favor. And once you get on the air, they are not going to cut you off so just make sure you get your information out in a favorable manner.  Although the poor dude did the best he could to salvage a poorly set up PR move.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And I just got some fresh feedback from one of the Domino&#8217;s Franchisee&#8217;s that are already using the new recipe. He said that it was a pretty mixed bag on whether people liked the new pizzas.  He  said that quite a few people thought it was too spicy since they went from a black pepper sauce to a red pepper one.  He said to try the Marinara.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now here again as I said in my previous post.  It does not matter how good the new pizzas are, they have a very good chance of alienating 65% of their customer base just by the very fact that they changed their whole pizza and are not giving people the chance to get the &#8220;Classic&#8221; Domino&#8217;s Pizza. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And yes, just think about the Coke fiasco.  There is a great piece on that at <a href="http://www.PeoplePatternPower.com" target="_blank">www.PeoplePatternPower.com.</a><br />

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">So, think about this the next time you want to try something brand spanking new. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Here is a little secret. </strong> Don&#8217;t change your main product, simply add your new one and keep the old one.  This will actually have an appeal to a different type of People that have a another type of  Personality Language Pattern.   It is about Options and Procedures and you can actually have a very good chance of adding new customers this way. </span></p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">This is a takeoff on a classic David Ogilvy Advertisement from about 40 years ago but it still rings true today.  The only thing your customers really care about is how you are going to help them solve their problems as fast as possible.   If you can explain their problem to them better than they can, they will credit you with the knowledge of how to fix it and therefore buy from you.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">So, if you have visitors to your site but they are not converting or just plain leave, then your website design is hosed and does not follow the above.   If you don&#8217;t get your website fixed, you can bet there  is a competitor out there that will fix his or her&#8217;s and gladly take your customers away from you for good.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And also for Pete&#8217;s sake, sites with light backgrounds and dark text out sell sites with dark backgrounds and light text 2 to 1.  So, if you have an artsy fartsy web designer that says it looks cool&#8230;. tell her while that may be true,  making money form the site is actually even cooler.   <img src='http://www.21to21.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </span></p>

I put them right on top</span><span style="color: #0000ff;"> because if I don&#8217;t hook you right now, you could be losing thousands of dollars a month if you don&#8217;t read this. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I don&#8217;t care if you are just starting off in your new business be it online or offline i.e.  A Brick and Mortar business, are a non-profit or even a Church.  Membership sites can do those numbers and more, and I will show you how and why.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I had started to write a few paragraphs on the subject, but then I began thinking about all of the questions that I have gotten over the years about Membership Sites and decided to try to answer as many of them as I could.  The other reason that I am posting this now with  typos and all before my editor looks it over rather is so that I do not commit one of the worst 3 mistakes you can make  in Membership Sites and specifically in marketing period.  Read below to see what I am talking about.<br />

<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">Would you like to add a lot of cash to your bottom line in the next 7 to 10 days? Say $250 &#8211; $20,000 or more.  (I realize a &#8220;lot&#8221; is relative here)<br />

<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">Would you like to finally get residual income from your blog posts, products, or even Brick and Mortar customers?</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">Can you handle making money while you sleep?<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">If you answered yes to any of the above then you are in luck.  Actually I think luck does happen, but I also think that you are here because you are supposed to be.  Because you are searching for a way to make more money for yourself and the kicker is that I am going to show you a way for you to make your customers happier at the same time.<span id="more-353"></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I would hazard to guess that more than likely you do not have a Membership Site as you prob</span><span style="color: #0000ff;">ably would not be here reading this although, maybe you have one and it is not working as well as you had hoped it would.  Regardless if you have one or not,  hopefully after reading t</span><span style="color: #0000ff;">his you will start putting yours together correctly and I mean <strong>as soon as you are done reading this</strong>. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Did you know that a Membership Site can add 200% to 300% or more to your bottom line within the next 7 days?  With those types of numbers ( I know you may not believe this yet, but those numbers might be conservative and I will show you why in a couple of seconds.)  I can&#8217;t think of any better way to increase profits and customer satisfaction than having your very own Membership Site.  If I can hold your attention for the next 30 seconds take a look at some numbers here that I have put together for you and I bet you will stick around and read the rest of this.</span></p>

Which is where I implement and develop the information and techniques in the first place.</strong></span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Then there are other options that range from about $100 to about $25,000+ to get something that is close to Facebook or MySpace in functionality.  I will give you three examples of different types of Membership Software and set ups that I use for myself and my clients.  Each has pro&#8217;s and con&#8217;s.  Each has different costs and benefits. There is no one size fits all solution for everyone. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">There are dozens and dozens of different Programs out there and I think that at one time or another I have tried almost all of them.  Most have some real drawbacks that do not become apparent until after you purchase them and try to use them.  Getting the wrong one can really bite you hard in wasted time, wasted money, and wasted opportunity.  You can spend days, weeks, or ever months tweaking them and still not have them do what you want them to.  We are talking potentially hundreds of hours of wasted time that you could be using to create more content or a better product for your clients.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Even the ones that I use all involve tweaking, but we seem to have hit upon three work horses that we have modified a little or a lot that work rather well depending on your situation and your audience.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">You can go out there, buy one, try and install one of them and set them up yourself.  You can spend days, weeks or months going through the learning curve, or you can hire someone like 21to21.com do all of that for you.  You will save yourself the hassles and the headaches, and wasted money both spent and earned.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Warning -</strong> </span>There are a ton of dirt cheap Membership Site Programs out there.  Some I have have seen for as little as $27.   Sounds great, looks good.  The problem is that many have big gaping security holes in them that are susceptible to getting hacked big time.  Not only can you lose your members and your data, but end up losing your hosting account too if they upload a virus on you server.    The reason I know this is because it happened to me.  We caught it in about an hour but it was not good.  No fun at all.  Now this was a couple of years ago and that was when I really started digging into Membership Sites.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">After about two dozen plus trials of different software configurations, thousands of dollars, and hundreds and hundreds of hours later I have come up with three really good solutions that will fit pretty much every need possible that I have run into.  Descriptions and pricing are at the end of this.</span></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Pricing And Incentive For Your Membership Site<br />
</strong></span></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">This is the age old question and one that does not have one right answer.  You can start low say even $4.95 a month and attract a lot of visitors who will more than likely stay around for a while as long as you have good content or charge $50 per month if it is niche information of high value.  You can even charge $200 per month or more if you think you have something that is a real hot commodity, and has a bunch of bells and whistles.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The upside with the lower pricing is that it should be a no brainer sale but there is a perceived value stigma attached.  It is cheap so it must not be that good.  I have actually have a membership site which was priced at $4.95 per month. When I raised it to $27 per month I got more sales.  Same exact info.  Just different pricing and a different perceived value.  Go figure!</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">But one of the things that I do like is to have a tiered membership program that allows you to get the best of both worlds.  You can have two or more pricing levels of membership. We do this ourselves.  We actually have two levels at this time which are $27 and  $47 per month, each with a $1 dollar 14 day trial period.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Our members get a huge 50% discount on two of our Membership Installation Services and they get first crack at any of our training modules or products as we have a number of limited space educational products.  One level also gets a new eBook as well.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It is up to you how you want to incentivize but you should do it in some way to help get people get over their fear of the unknown.  If you have a good program like we do, you know that once they get in they are going to find tons of value for them to stay around for a long time.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">With a multi-tiered membership program, you let them decide how committed they want to be.  Now if you have more than one level you are going to have to differentiate the content and value.  Perhaps you give the information to the higher level first or your throw in bonuses such as Webinars, conference calls, reports, audios, videos, books, consulting etc.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The best thing to do is to try out a couple of price points and see what happens.  You can also check out what your competition is doing and tag along.  But 9 times our of 10, they won&#8217;t have a Membership Site or if they do, it is not run that well. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Last but not least, how much would you pay for your information?  Are you a member of any Membership Sites, how much do you get and how much do you fork out for it?<br />

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Do Not Make These 3 Deadly Membership Site Mistakes</span></strong></span></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I have seen this with my own clients and finally learned the hard way about these three mistakes that will mess you up and can cost you thousands of dollars in profits. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The biggest mistake by far is waiting until you get all of your content just right before starting your Membership $ite.  After several clients in one quarter did this, I have learned to spot them a mile away.  I personally will drop a client like a hot potato that does any one of these three things. </span></p>

<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They fiddle fart around and want to get all of the content perfect, they rewrite it 20 times and it takes days or weeks to get one little piece of content out.  If you are an anal retentive perfectionist, this is not going to be a lot of fun for you. And frankly, while I love to do things right, if you want to be a client, expect to pay a lot for this as it will take 3 to 4 times as long to do your site. But if you have the money, then we will be glad to help.<br />
</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They don&#8217;t have &#8220;time&#8221; to put content into the site.  Both of these will ruin your membership site before it ever gets off the ground. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They Dork around with the &#8220;design&#8221; until it is just perfect.  In the meantime weeks or months go by and with it lost revenue and opportunities.<br />
</span><br />
<span style="color: #0000ff;">I have yet to see any Membership Site that can&#8217;t be ready for a Beta run in 7-10 days once you get the software installed.  An exception to this would be if you are building a monster site with video, blogs, audio, and self-made profiles (See Backbone #3 below).  Those can take about a month to get up.  But even then, the foundations are usually ready in only 7 days.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now this was not always the case and it has taken me a while to figure this out.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">But I like to say that even if it is your very first Membership Site, you can start making money from it in 10 days or less in most cases.  And often times as soon as 72 hours after the software is installed if you just focus on content and let someone handle getting the software going for you.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now a Tip for drastically speeding up your content creation is to simply record audio and then have it transcribed.  This can be in the form of having someone ask you questions or you just talking into a mike with a basic outline of what you are talking about in front of you.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I will put in the word count on this particular post as I have a feeling it will be a rather long one, ( it is about 6,200 words) but if I were to do an audio of this and then have it transcribed over at YakWrite.com, it would cost me around $25 dollars for this.   So if you put post 1 piece a week like this you are looking at $100 in expenses.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Lets see here now, if you have 250 members at $20 that is $5,000 divided by lets say even 10 hours of work that is $500 per hour!  I challenge you to show me any other &#8220;legal&#8221; business where anyone, no matter what their education level is,  that has some expertise in virtually any field or niche, can make that kind of money with only that amount of time invested.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Set up a deadline that you will have it up by.  Be it 3 days if you are really gung ho or better yet, I suggest a 7-10 day schedule.  You can do it.  This is not government work.  Mark it on your calendar &#8220;Membership Site Launch.&#8221;  Now Mark your date and then I want you to add 5 more days and then put, REAL Membership Site Launch Day.  If you get it done on the first date, great, but more than likely it will take you a few extra days to get it right.</span></p>

<p>So, what results are you going to deliver and how can you convey that to them?  For the most part they don&#8217;t care about you, they care about what results you are going to deliver to them period.</p>
<p>Oh, unless you are going to Entertain them, and even then it is Results.  So when you are speaking with your customers or marketing to them, what Results are you going to give them?  Make sure you convey it in simple understandable terms.</p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I think these guys know who there customers should be.What do you think?  The picture was taken at night but  I think you can make out the picture of the dog in the upper right hand corner.  I was driving to see a friend at the hospital one night and saw this and had to stop and take a picture because I thought, Wow, what a great piece of advertising.  It was on the side of a building.<br />

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">The thing is that too many companies in their effort to attract clients do not let the client know that they are a bad fit.   Sometimes clients fool you as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And while I put up some of the more easily identifiable negative traits, sometimes it is nothing bad per say, it is just a bad fit personality wise.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">In any case, do your best to try and keep some of your bad clients for whatever reason from ever becoming your clients in the first place and you will be doing both of you a favor.</span></p>
