<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Every once in awhile, a light bulb goes on for me (incandescent ones, I don‘t do fluorescents. Hey the Air Force banned them for a reason) when thoughts come together that have been brewing for some time.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I happened to be going through some of the piles of books that I have and came across “The Power of Positive Thinking In Business” by Scott W. Ventrella.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I had read and own a first run copy of Norman Vincent Peal’s classic, “The Power of Positive Thinking.” Good book indeed and runs along with “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.<span id="more-773"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I had casually read through it before and it had not tripped my trigger, although I had lent it out to several people and one person in particular gave it credit for changing the course of her career and leading her to go back to school for her Masters Degree.   Still, I had not revisited it.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">But as I opened it up it this time I came across a section that I think sums up one of the keys to business success, and success in most areas of our lives: this is called the Pygmalion Effect.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">For those of you that do not know what it is, here you go.  In mythology, there was a sculptor who sculpted a beautiful woman.   He poured his heart, soul, and all of his skill into the sculpture.  It was so perfect that he fell in love with it and he wished it were a real woman and named her Galatea.  Well, the Goddess Venus saw this and actually made Galatea into a real live woman.  Thus arose the Pygmalion effect, where you get what you wish or expect.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Spring forward several thousand years and we end up with one Dr. Rosenthal of Harvard. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">He did a famous experiment where he went to a school and pulled the names of three teachers out of a hat at random.   He also pulled the names of some students at random.   He then told the teachers that they were the three best teachers in the school and that they were going to be getting the best students to see how well they could do with them.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">At the end of the year, on average, the students&#8217; performance was 20 to 30% higher than the rest of the school.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">This experiment was conducted over 300 times with similar results.  In essence, when the teachers thought of themselves as stars and that their students were gifted, the teachers treated the students as gifted, and both the students and teachers performed up to these expectations.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">For me, this was mind blowing that such a simple thing could increase results dramatically.  But, then again, it does seem to fit in the realm of common sense and from what I have observed over three decades working with people.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">In fact one in one of my early sales job I had a sales manager name Robert that demanded that when he asked you how your were doing, that you always replied with something positive such as &#8221; I am doing GREAT&#8221; or &#8221; I am doing Fantastic&#8221;. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">At first I really thought he was a nut job as I saw him fire and literally take out Jim, our 2nd best salesman on the spot one morning when he said he was having a crappy morning and he started to go off on a tirade about Robert and his dumb be positive policy.  Robert told him to shut up and right then and to take it out side I said whoaa&#8230;   Well, Jim got about 4 more &#8221; non-positive words out&#8221; and it never made it outside because Robert had a wicked right hook and dropped him like a rock and said he would not tolerate it at all.   Guess what, he meant it.  No whishy washy mamby pamby HR policy there.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">He would not tolerate any negative talk at all amongst the sales people and he meant it. No whining or complaining, no bitching or moaning.  If you had a complaint or issue, you had to frame it in a positive fashion.  He knew how important that it was to do this. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">The proof was in the pudding as it were in that our sales group out sold all others by not just 10 or 20% but by a whopping 1,500%.  No one else was even close to our group.  It made me appreciate and respect that whole policy.   Perhaps this is why I have such a low tolerance for negative and whiny people.  I know how truly destructive this seemingly innocuous poisonous behavior can be to all people around that person.  The only exception to this rule is if I think the person is worth redeeming.  Otherwise, I let them wallow in their own self-produced misery of a life.  Stay away from me thank you very much. <img src='http://www.21to21.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /><br />

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now back to the Teachers and the phenomenal results that were produced.  What was funny (OK, perhaps not)  is that rather than this being embraced and implemented on a wide scale in schools across the country, this caused a flurry of criticism within the teaching community as they said results are irrelevant.  I am not kidding or making this up. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">They felt that children should feel good about themselves and not be compared to others and that there must have been something else going on.  So rather than being implemented on a larger scale, they did not adopt it.  Got to love Liberal Progressive Teachers Unions, but then again not.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Professor J. Sterling Livingston also did experiments with management in business with, as you may have guessed it, the same results, and those results were published in the “Harvard Business Review.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Even Peter Drucker seems to weigh in on the subject as well.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">&#8220;The best way to predict the future is to create it.&#8221;<br />

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I think if you look, you see this with a great many of the successful entrepreneurs and companies out there.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, Richard Branson, and Ashley Qualls (more on her later) all have one thing in common.  They expect success from themselves and those around them.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now how can you implement this in your own business? </span></p>
<ul>
<li><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Make sure that everyone buys into what your are doing.  Do not tolerate negativity about what you are doing from anyone, even if they are just joking.  Talk to the person and tell them that you do not want to hear it nor can they talk to anyone involved that way.  If they don&#8217;t get it, get rid of them.  Seriously, your business may depend on it.  While this may seem harsh, the subconscious mind is a funny thing and picks up on the smallest things and tends to expand on them.  Good, bad, it goes to town on them.  One negative person in an organization may be costing you thousands and thousands of dollars or more.<br />

<li><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">Plan for success by making sure that you think through what is going to happen once you get there.<br />

</ul>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">But perhaps more importantly, there is a lesson in this for all of us.  Now do you have to be sickeningly sweet and Politically Correct all of the time?  No, and point in fact being PC all of the time can also have a negative effect on profits as well.  But of course just use common sense.  Don&#8217;t allow people to share being in a bad mood, or making negative non-productive opinions.  Make them couch their speech in a positive fashion.  This can take months to break bad habits but you will notice not only are people more productive, but they feel better about themselves.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Your expectations also play a large role in our own performance as well.   You need to start expecting success in your business and in the rest of your life.  Your outlook plays a large role in your conscious and subconscious actions whether you realize it or not.  That is a reason why you should avoid negative people like the plague.  Especially when you are in start up mode.  Actually, you should avoid them all of the time.  I put a link to it in the PS below.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">That is not to say that thinking “I am going to do well” in your business  is going to take the place of research and educating yourself, and work, but your expectation of doing well or mediocre may have a much larger impact on your success than you ever thought. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Thinking and expecting that you are going to get 8% returns versus 21.5% could be the difference between actually getting either result.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">It might just be worth “thinking” about.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Have a wonderfully profitable day.  And, I have faith in you. Now we just need to make sure you do as well.  Plus, it can and will make a huge impact on how Happy your are in the future.  Happiness is not a destination, but a choice we make.<br />

<p>While this may sound crazy, this is one of those counter-intuitive techniques that I see very few businesses using that is one of my top 5 Profit Secrets.</p>
<p>First off, most people don&#8217;t even consider it.  Their competition is their competition.</p>
<p>But for those that do, there may not be easier profits to be had.</p>
<p>For one, it is truly free.  It usually just involves a phone call or an email to get the ball rolling.</p>
<p>Secondly, in many cases, your competition is not really your competition anyway.  If you are in a decent sized niche, if you pick the right company, you both end up coming out so far ahead of the game it is not even funny.</p>
<p>I find this in the Consulting end of things especially but, it is true no matter what you are selling.  You both have a customer base and you may even be selling the same products, but at any given moment, that customer base may not want to buy what you are selling, so why not offer them your competitions products or services and make money from them?<span id="more-4148"></span></p>
<p>If you are limited pie type of person you won&#8217;t get this.  But if you are not, and you know that the pie is ever expanding you will and you can trounce those people that don&#8217;t get it.</p>
<p>Right now for instance, I get calls on a regular basis from other consulting companies to do Marking, Social Media, or SEO work for them.  And guess what, that is fine.  I am happy to do that for them.</p>
<p>And upon occasion I will call them if they have a field of expertise.  They are happy because they make money, my client is happy because they get the best service, and normally the can&#8217;t believe that I would be honest enough to tell them I want to bring in someone else to handle a specific part of their needs.</p>
<p>I usually end up with clients for life. Why, because I am honest with them and I never worry about the other consultants stealing clients.  One, because I am honest with my client, they would tell me, and two the consultants I work with just don&#8217;t do that.</p>
<p>And if the client or the consultant were to do that, then they both did me a favor by pointing out that they are scumbags in the first place and I know longer have to work with either of them ever again.</p>
<p>If there is other work they they end up doing for the client, guess  what?  I get a piece of the action on that.  Everyone wins.</p>
<p>There are other ways to to do Joint Ventures as well that are beneficial to all parties.</p>
<p>Perhaps you can share mailing lists, do joint advertising, do joint presentations, sell each others products that are not in your line, make use of under utilizes facilities or capacity, or even employees or contractors.</p>
<p>There are dozens of way for you to work with the competition and in turn, trounce your competition.</p>
<p>Think out of the box about your &#8220;Competition&#8221; and both of your will be glad you did.</p>

<p>Well, like a lot of revelations, this one popped up rather unexpectedly right after I took a <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Green Pill</strong></span> this morning.</p>
<p>With this revelation came a whole breadth of understanding like revelations often do.  Point in fact, one of those revelations is I can tell you are <strong>Intelligently Lazy</strong> too because you are here reading this.</p>
<p>Hopefully, if I communicate this to you correctly, you are going to want to become the laziest person you know.</p>
<p>You may not know it yet, but I am actually giving you quite a compliment.  Let me explain to you why, by giving you two old adages you may have heard before.<span id="more-1180"></span></p>
<ul>
<li>Most people are too busy making a living to ever become wealthy</li>
<li>Most people are too busy doing urgent things, rather than important ones</li>
</ul>
<p>This is because, as the old saying goes, it is hard to drain the swamp when you are up to your ass in alligators.</p>
<p>You are probably saying OK, what the heck is he talking about?  Well, I bring this up for a couple of reasons that I will make clear in a minute.  Here are some scenarios so that you can see what I mean.</p>
<h3>Which Pill Are Your Taking Everyday?</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/RedPillShadow.jpg"><img class="alignleft" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 10px; display: inline;" title="RedPillShadow" src="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/RedPillShadow_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="RedPillShadow" width="135" height="62" align="left" /></a> I am going to call this option #1 or the <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Red Pill</strong></span> which is the Intelligently Hard Work Pill. You can use your intelligence, work hard, and spend a lifetime trying to figure out how to do things on your own.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/GreenPill.jpg"><img class="alignleft" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 10px; display: inline;" title="GreenPill" src="http://www.21to21.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/GreenPill_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="GreenPill" width="135" height="60" /></a> I am going to call this option #2 or the <strong><span style="color: #008000;">Green Pill</span></strong> which is the <strong>Intelligently Lazy</strong> Pill. You can read a book or a blog and learn the basics from someone else who may have spent their whole life learning about a subject or perhaps spent millions of dollars learning what works best and then emulate what they do, or even hire them.  These people most likely love what they do and are therefore very, very good at it.</p>
<p>So I ask you this,  which pill would you rather take?  The <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Red Pill</strong></span> or the <strong><span style="color: #008000;">Green Pill</span></strong>?  Which one do you think is going to cure your malaise called lack of wealth or put more money in your pocket the quickest? Which do you think is going to work the best?</p>
<p>Now if you are here, you have the propensity to be <strong>Intelligently Lazy</strong> which is a great thing in that you are out trying to learn something from someone else on how to be profitable.  Now what we have to do, and this goes against nearly all conventional wisdom, is  get you to become even lazier by learning from others even more.</p>
<p>Once you recognize that the lazier you become in this particular area, the faster profits are going to start hitting your bottom line.</p>
<p>I am going to reveal something else that I know about you.  You are involved in selling or marketing something.  You have a website or work in a business that sells something to customers who then give you money.</p>
<p>OK, I have to admit that one was a no brainer. That is unless you work the Government, you have to be involved in producing something of value that is traded or sold.</p>
<p>Even if you are not directly involved sales or marketing, nothing happens with any business until there is a sale and you are involved somewhere in the process.  With that in mind, and remembering how we decided that taking the <strong><span style="color: #008000;">Green Pill</span></strong> is the only smart way to go, how many books have you read on sales and marketing lately?</p>
<p>Hmm…do you think it might be a good idea to up your reading list a tad?</p>
<p>I am going to suggest that you read some of the following so that you are not inadvertently slipping yourself a <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Red Pill.</strong></span></p>

Absolutely, and I will post more at a later time,  but these should get you pointed in the right direction.  So the question is just how <strong>Intelligently Lazy</strong> can you become and how fast can you become truly lazy?  Your bank account could become larger right away.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">You can get most of these books on Amazon.com and if you buy used versions, you can pick them up for only a few bucks.<br />

<h3>Doing Things That Are Urgent Versus Doing Things That Are Important And Alligators</h3>
<p>Here is where it can get out of focus sometimes.</p>
<p>You need to figure out which alligators are merely a pain in the butt and are not putting you in mortal danger. These non life-threatening alligators can take the form of having 20 things to do seemingly all of the time, having customers wanting something, an email that has to get out, or just trying to keep up with all the different things going on that absolutely demand your attention right now.</p>
<p>Could you put off sending that email to customers until tomorrow?  If that&#8217;s the case, use the time today to read a chapter out of one of the books above and make your email even better.</p>
<p>The result could be you getting a better response rate and 5 more orders which in turn eliminates an alligator that was biting you.  It can take the form of a vendor looking for payment or perhaps it is the alligator that says you really should upgrade your Website.</p>
<p>I am not suggesting you make a list per se, although I do find once you write down the alligators&#8217; names, they are usually a lot less scary.</p>
<p>Then you simply take a step back and look at what you can do to be more <strong>Intelligently Lazy</strong> about things.  Oftentimes, it will make several other alligators go away as well.</p>
<p>Now I mentioned that I got the revelation after taking my <span style="color: #008000;"><strong>Green Pill</strong></span> this morning.  I was reading some Drayton Bird who was a partner of David Ogilvy&#8217;s and is a pretty smart Bird if I must say so.</p>
<p>I have been pushing for <strong>Planned Ignorance</strong> as well with myself and my clients, which is a whole other subject and I will explain at a later date.  Because of this, when Bird mentioned <span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Intelligently Lazy,</strong></span> it fit in with what I have been observing over the years with successful people and in my own success. Let me have another one of those <span style="color: #009900;"><strong>Green Pills</strong></span> please, Gulp!</p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now I don&#8217;t want to fling stones here as I have said before I have pulled similar mistakes before in the past and have taken steps so that we don&#8217;t do that anymore.  But this is a multi-billion dollar company, geeshe.<br />

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Here is how and why the man or woman in their Garage, Basement, or Bedroom that is hoping to start a business and beat the big companies out there that have hundreds of employees and millions of dollars at their disposal can do it.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I have written about this before over the years but I think that I have honed it down so that everyone with two neurons firing (that could be me on a good day) can understand it.  Here is the secret to how you as an Entrepreneur can beat the big guys.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">First I want to layout some ground work that I have done before but, I want to put this all inside one nut shell.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">The thing that we have to start off with is Moore&#8217;s Law which is Gordon Moore of Hewlett Packard fame that says basically this&#8230;.</span></p>
<p><em><strong><span style="color: #0000ff;">The capability and speed of computer chips will double every 18 months and the price will be cut in half.</span></strong></em></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">This has remained true since 1965 if you can believe it or not.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">What does this mean to our conversation about the Entrepreneur being able to take on big companies?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Well, first off while many people know this, very few realize how fundamentally this has changed business.</span></p>
<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Washington And Most Companies Don&#8217;t Get It And How Moore&#8217;s Law Has Drastically And Fundamentally Changed The Economy Forever<br />
</span></h2>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">First and foremost most medium and large businesses do not realize how this has changed things and most assuredly the Government has not realized it either.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Over 70% of all people are employed by small businesses currently and nearly 90% of all new jobs are now being created by them, in spite of the Government&#8217;s best attempt to not only not help Small Businesses, but, make running and starting one even more and more difficult if not practically impossible.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">In the recent stimulus package for instance while there were hundreds of billions given to large businesses, did you know that there was more money given to the National Endowment For The Arts than to Small Businesses?  That is how out of touch Washing DC and even most Politicians in most States have become.  When it comes to this basic tenant of the Economy and how much things have changes since the 70&#8242;s, Politicians truly are worse than clueless and what they did has hurt the ability of Small Businesses to borrow money and survive and thrive which is one of the main reasons I believe the Goobers in DC were surprised at the climbing unemployment rates.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">So let me explain why the folks in DC and a lot of others don&#8217;t understand what is going on.  Because of Moore&#8217;s Law, and what it has done to computers,  you as an individual can sit in your underwear in your Bedroom or on the beach for the matter and do the work of 15 to 17 people say five to seven years ago. Or even only 24 months ago as I will show you.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And actually I put the multiplier at 17 people about every 2 years now.  I will show you why in a later post and I am calling is &#8220;<strong>Anderson&#8217;s Entrepreneurial Law&#8221;</strong>.   So what this means is that when it comes to being able to produce a professional looking products online, put up sales pages, ordering, even accounting and customer service, even only 5 years ago, what you can do by yourself now, would have taken 15 to 20 people to do.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Plus, prices have dropped dramatically.  A url or domain name used to cost $100 ten years ago, now you can get them at places like GoDaddy.com (see link to the right) for under $10.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">The same thing for hosting, and websites, and a host of other tools you need to go online.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now lets also bring in another fact that I think is just as critical and that is speed of implementation.  I have also written extensively on the past about this as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Here is how Ms. and Mr  Entrepreneur can run circles around the big boys.  If you have ever worked in even a relatively good sized company, there is a whole chain of command that you have to run through to get anything new done.  There the whole inevitably internal political chain of command that an idea has to run the gauntlet of and then there is the real one that the idea has to survive as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">First worker Bee A has a great idea for a widget to solve a problem she sees people having on the Web.  She knows she can probably fix it by doing x, y, and z and it would take her at most 2 weeks to get the solution done. </span></p>
<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">But&#8230;.<br />
</span></h2>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Here are just a couple of scenarios.  She presents it to her immediate supervisor and depending on if the supervisor has any brains or is in a good mood or not, she might say , &#8220;that is stupid&#8221; or &#8220;that is kind of good&#8221; or &#8220;that is great but we should do it like this&#8221;.  Now the brilliant million dollar idea might get shot down at the start because the supervisor is ignorant, does not feel like starting anything new, is jealous she did not think of it, or knows that her supervisor does not like ideas.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">But regardless, there are at least a dozens of hurdles that the idea must overcome, and even if it does not get shot down, it may become so changes by the time it gets approved because everyone wants to put in their two cents worth that the solution may not work.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Couple that with a time frame that could realistically be months or years for the idea to actually get out there, the opportunity is more than likely gone.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now take the same million dollar idea with our intrepid Ms. Entrepreneur.  She see the problem, comes up with the solution, creates the fix herself or outsources it and two weeks later she introduces it to the market place and it is a hit and the million dollar idea pays her a million dollars.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">This scenario is repeated thousands and thousands of times each and every day.  She who gets to the market place first more often than not wins the game before other even realize there was one going on.</span></p>
<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">An Entrepreneur&#8217;s Distinct Advantage<br />
</span></h2>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">The key for the Entrepreneur is to successfully use the leverage that Moore&#8217;s law provides and the speed of implementation that is simply not available to medium to large companies..</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now this is easier said than done, but in the next few weeks, I am going to lay out the exact tools provided to us by Moore&#8217;s law that you can use compete and beat the big boys at their own game.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">As you may know I get to Beta Test quite a few things before they get out to the public and there are some tools that are coming out soon that are going to totally level the playing field and be game changers for most of what is going on with the web and marketing.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And I have not heard a peep about what I am going to share with you anywhere else.  Really mind blowing cool stuff.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">What are you focusing on?  I am pulling this one directly out of my own playbook and the question is directly relevant to how much money you are going to make.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">Are you focusing on getting things done and out there that can actually make you money?  If not, you are shooting yourself in the foot for sure.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">It is so easy to get scattered and be working on a dozen projects that really are not going to help you get money in your pocket.  It really is about getting things done and out there, even if they are only 85% or 90% of where you think they should be.<span id="more-857"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">I was reminded of this fact last week while speaking with one of my partners.  We were actually looking a a website that I must say was probably one of the worst graphic disasters that I have seen in sometime but, it was up, it have a payment button and a good description of the product and the guy had something done and out there and had at least put himself in front of the possibility of making money.  So, he was a 1,000% ahead of the vast majority of people, including myself on one particular project that should have been out there two months ago.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">So, 80% or 90% and out rather than waiting for 100% and never being put out there will win hands down every time.  Get it done, Do IT.  Put yourself in front of money.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">How are you going to show them that you can fix their problem right away? Can they click at most two times to solve their problem?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">If not your are losing customers&#8230;.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">This is a takeoff on a classic David Ogilvy Advertisement from about 40 years ago but it still rings true today.  The only thing your customers really care about is how you are going to help them solve their problems as fast as possible.   If you can explain their problem to them better than they can, they will credit you with the knowledge of how to fix it and therefore buy from you.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">So, if you have visitors to your site but they are not converting or just plain leave, then your website design is hosed and does not follow the above.   If you don&#8217;t get your website fixed, you can bet there  is a competitor out there that will fix his or her&#8217;s and gladly take your customers away from you for good.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">And also for Pete&#8217;s sake, sites with light backgrounds and dark text out sell sites with dark backgrounds and light text 2 to 1.  So, if you have an artsy fartsy web designer that says it looks cool&#8230;. tell her while that may be true,  making money form the site is actually even cooler.   <img src='http://www.21to21.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </span></p>

I put them right on top</span><span style="color: #0000ff;"> because if I don&#8217;t hook you right now, you could be losing thousands of dollars a month if you don&#8217;t read this. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I don&#8217;t care if you are just starting off in your new business be it online or offline i.e.  A Brick and Mortar business, are a non-profit or even a Church.  Membership sites can do those numbers and more, and I will show you how and why.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I had started to write a few paragraphs on the subject, but then I began thinking about all of the questions that I have gotten over the years about Membership Sites and decided to try to answer as many of them as I could.  The other reason that I am posting this now with  typos and all before my editor looks it over rather is so that I do not commit one of the worst 3 mistakes you can make  in Membership Sites and specifically in marketing period.  Read below to see what I am talking about.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I would hazard to guess that more than likely you do not have a Membership Site as you prob</span><span style="color: #0000ff;">ably would not be here reading this although, maybe you have one and it is not working as well as you had hoped it would.  Regardless if you have one or not,  hopefully after reading t</span><span style="color: #0000ff;">his you will start putting yours together correctly and I mean <strong>as soon as you are done reading this</strong>. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Did you know that a Membership Site can add 200% to 300% or more to your bottom line within the next 7 days?  With those types of numbers ( I know you may not believe this yet, but those numbers might be conservative and I will show you why in a couple of seconds.)  I can&#8217;t think of any better way to increase profits and customer satisfaction than having your very own Membership Site.  If I can hold your attention for the next 30 seconds take a look at some numbers here that I have put together for you and I bet you will stick around and read the rest of this.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">There a quite a number of reasons for all of this and I will name name a few that I think are relevant.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>1.   It allows you to give better quality and focused content.  This is because even using just our first example of 50 members at $10 per month, it will give  you an incentive to give them your best information if for no other reason than to make sure they stay members.  This is especially true if you are just starting out.  Because of the income your Membership Site will produce you will be able to spend more time and effort on what is in your membership site.</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>2.   While I give away a ton of my best information, it would be unfair to devalue &#8220;the best of the best&#8221; information by giving it away for free versus giving it to my paying clients.  Also, quite a bit of what I do,  I do not want out there for everyone and their mother in-law to see and use as it would hurt my own businesses. Which is where I implement and develop the information and techniques in the first place.</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>3.   It allows you to focus and fine tune content, and it allows you  to sell your content over and over again as you get new clients in.</strong></span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The how part is both as easy and as hard as you want to make it.  A Membership Site can be as easy as you going to your website and setting up a private directory that you password protect.  Now you can have one password or spend a minute giving each new member their own password that they have to use to gain access to the information.  Most hosting services have how-to instructions for doing this.  Cost?  ZERO!</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">For instances you have a Blog, just password protect the directory it is in and presto, you have a membership site. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Then there are other options that range from about $100 to about $25,000+ to get something that is close to Facebook or MySpace in functionality.  I will give you three examples of different types of Membership Software and set ups that I use for myself and my clients.  Each has pro&#8217;s and con&#8217;s.  Each has different costs and benefits. There is no one size fits all solution for everyone. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">There are dozens and dozens of different Programs out there and I think that at one time or another I have tried almost all of them.  Most have some real drawbacks that do not become apparent until after you purchase them and try to use them.  Getting the wrong one can really bite you hard in wasted time, wasted money, and wasted opportunity.  You can spend days, weeks, or ever months tweaking them and still not have them do what you want them to.  We are talking potentially hundreds of hours of wasted time that you could be using to create more content or a better product for your clients.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Even the ones that I use all involve tweaking, but we seem to have hit upon three work horses that we have modified a little or a lot that work rather well depending on your situation and your audience.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">You can go out there, buy one, try and install one of them and set them up yourself.  You can spend days, weeks or months going through the learning curve, or you can hire someone like 21to21.com do all of that for you.  You will save yourself the hassles and the headaches, and wasted money both spent and earned.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Warning -</strong> </span>There are a ton of dirt cheap Membership Site Programs out there.  Some I have have seen for as little as $27.   Sounds great, looks good.  The problem is that many have big gaping security holes in them that are susceptible to getting hacked big time.  Not only can you lose your members and your data, but end up losing your hosting account too if they upload a virus on you server.    The reason I know this is because it happened to me.  We caught it in about an hour but it was not good.  No fun at all.  Now this was a couple of years ago and that was when I really started digging into Membership Sites.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">After about two dozen plus trials of different software configurations, thousands of dollars, and hundreds and hundreds of hours later I have come up with three really good solutions that will fit pretty much every need possible that I have run into.  Descriptions and pricing are at the end of this.</span></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>Pricing And Incentive For Your Membership Site<br />
</strong></span></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">This is the age old question and one that does not have one right answer.  You can start low say even $4.95 a month and attract a lot of visitors who will more than likely stay around for a while as long as you have good content or charge $50 per month if it is niche information of high value.  You can even charge $200 per month or more if you think you have something that is a real hot commodity, and has a bunch of bells and whistles.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The upside with the lower pricing is that it should be a no brainer sale but there is a perceived value stigma attached.  It is cheap so it must not be that good.  I have actually have a membership site which was priced at $4.95 per month. When I raised it to $27 per month I got more sales.  Same exact info.  Just different pricing and a different perceived value.  Go figure!</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">But one of the things that I do like is to have a tiered membership program that allows you to get the best of both worlds.  You can have two or more pricing levels of membership. We do this ourselves.  We actually have two levels at this time which are $27 and  $47 per month, each with a $1 dollar 14 day trial period.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Our members get a huge 50% discount on two of our Membership Installation Services and they get first crack at any of our training modules or products as we have a number of limited space educational products.  One level also gets a new eBook as well.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">It is up to you how you want to incentivize but you should do it in some way to help get people get over their fear of the unknown.  If you have a good program like we do, you know that once they get in they are going to find tons of value for them to stay around for a long time.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">With a multi-tiered membership program, you let them decide how committed they want to be.  Now if you have more than one level you are going to have to differentiate the content and value.  Perhaps you give the information to the higher level first or your throw in bonuses such as Webinars, conference calls, reports, audios, videos, books, consulting etc.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The best thing to do is to try out a couple of price points and see what happens.  You can also check out what your competition is doing and tag along.  But 9 times our of 10, they won&#8217;t have a Membership Site or if they do, it is not run that well. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Last but not least, how much would you pay for your information?  Are you a member of any Membership Sites, how much do you get and how much do you fork out for it?<br />

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Do Not Make These 3 Deadly Membership Site Mistakes</span></strong></span></h2>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">I have seen this with my own clients and finally learned the hard way about these three mistakes that will mess you up and can cost you thousands of dollars in profits. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">The biggest mistake by far is waiting until you get all of your content just right before starting your Membership $ite.  After several clients in one quarter did this, I have learned to spot them a mile away.  I personally will drop a client like a hot potato that does any one of these three things. </span></p>

<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They fiddle fart around and want to get all of the content perfect, they rewrite it 20 times and it takes days or weeks to get one little piece of content out.  If you are an anal retentive perfectionist, this is not going to be a lot of fun for you. And frankly, while I love to do things right, if you want to be a client, expect to pay a lot for this as it will take 3 to 4 times as long to do your site. But if you have the money, then we will be glad to help.<br />

<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They don&#8217;t have &#8220;time&#8221; to put content into the site.  Both of these will ruin your membership site before it ever gets off the ground. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #0000ff;">They Dork around with the &#8220;design&#8221; until it is just perfect.  In the meantime weeks or months go by and with it lost revenue and opportunities.<br />

<span style="color: #0000ff;">I have yet to see any Membership Site that can&#8217;t be ready for a Beta run in 7-10 days once you get the software installed.  An exception to this would be if you are building a monster site with video, blogs, audio, and self-made profiles (See Backbone #3 below).  Those can take about a month to get up.  But even then, the foundations are usually ready in only 7 days.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Now this was not always the case and it has taken me a while to figure this out.<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">But I like to say that even if it is your very first Membership Site, you can start making money from it in 10 days or less in most cases.  And often times as soon as 72 hours after the software is installed if you just focus on content and let someone handle getting the software going for you.</span></p>

<p>Honestly, I do and I did here.  But the kicker is that it is only a screw up if you don&#8217;t fix it.  Fixing this little error right now.</p>
<p>I messed up in that I did not make it clear what 21to21.com is all about.  Here goes nothing.</p>
<p>21to21.com is all about <strong>How You Can Make More Money, not just a little bit but a Boat Load More</strong>.  Big revelation actually.  It is not about great techniques or the nuances of writing great copy or marketing and learning gobs of stuff.  That is all hog wash honestly or I may got out on a limb here and say bullshit.  It is about showing you what you can go do to make more money ASAP.  This involves giving your customers what they want at the price they are willing to pay.</p>
<p>Really that is it in a nut shell.   The lesson here is usually your customer is thinking that exact same thing.  It comes down to basically two things</p>
<p>They want <strong>Results or to be Entertained</strong>.  That is what they will pay you for and if you do it right, they will pay you a lot.</p>
<p>So, what results are you going to deliver and how can you convey that to them?  For the most part they don&#8217;t care about you, they care about what results you are going to deliver to them period.</p>
<p>Oh, unless you are going to Entertain them, and even then it is Results.  So when you are speaking with your customers or marketing to them, what Results are you going to give them?  Make sure you convey it in simple understandable terms.</p>
